 JOB SUMMARY
 
Whirley-DrinkWorks! is hiring a Printer Apprentice on 2nd and 3rd shift.

Operates multiple decorating equipment including liquid foam, pressure sensitive label, shrink label operations.  Has demonstrated competency on therimage, heat transfer, silk-screen and pad print operations. Begins to train and gain competency on offset printing and machine changeovers

 
 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 
PRODUCTION
Under direction of Print Supervisor, begins training sequence to gain competency on offset printing, both line and blend art.
 
May operate liquid foaming operations, as well as pressure sensitive and shrink labeling equipment as required by production demands. 
 
Continues to develop mastery on therimage labeling equipment, heat transfer, silkscreen and pad printing.
 
Able to accurately mix inks for silkscreen, pad print operations.  Learns to mix inks for offset printing.
 
Cleans fountains.
 
Is familiar with all decoration imprint standards and printing terminology for operations he/she performs. Stays current with all Company printing procedures and work instruction.
 
Learns to change over pad print machines. Must gain competency in order to be promoted to higher print position.
 
Ensures all order details are being followed by comparing the printing plates, ink and components and customer approved sample (or color proof) to those called for on the production routing.  Reports errors or conflicting information to the Print Supervisor. 
 
Maintains acceptable monthly average run efficiency by comparing standards versus expectations set by Print Supervisor and Manager during the training period.
 
Keeps indirect labor to a minimum by learning set up and fountain cleaning processes to gain standard efficiencies. Efficiency will be calculated by comparing standard versus actual time.
 
Learns proper methods of data entry to ensure all time, WIP and scrap are properly accounted for so that inventory is correct and data entry errors are minimal.
 
Learns to trouble-shoot common problems on all decorating equipment.
 
Strives to account for 100% of all parts used.  Maintains a reasonable rate for WIP scrap.  
Seeks advice of Print Supervisor and/or Quality Production Supervisor when downtime is needed and workers need to be re-assigned.
 
Completes required paperwork and data entry as each job is completed. Makes paper samples or cuts out color proof to attach to printing plates for subsequent jobs.
 
Learns to identify problems, take steps to eliminate them (either by correcting the problem, suggesting ideas for improvement) or working with the Print Supervisor/Production Maintenance to resolve them.
 
Operates one or more of the following machines:  spin welder, handle welder, swivel lid assembly machine, carton-taping machine, lid snapper and hot stamping. May make box lids, assemble box handles and may perform subassembly bagging.
 

 

QUALITY

Learns quality standards for acceptable decorated parts through instruction from Quality Department and on-the-job observations for imperfections in parts (i.e. oil marks, color, flashing, short-shots, scuffs) and how to properly report these problems.
 
Learns to perform all quality tests to be conducted at the time of set up (as defined by work instructions and company procedures) and how to spot check throughout product run to find smears, misalignments, dirt and other problems.
 
Strives for zero parts scrapped due to print-related reasons by retrieving all print scrap prior to downstream operations.
 
Pulls all necessary samples and places them in their designated location. Places reject in proper containers, labels them, and properly accounts for them.
 
Responsible for verifying that all necessary additives are in ink, as required.  Is aware of ink substitutions and makes sure they are followed.
 

 

SAFETY

Responsible for safe operation of equipment.  Reports any unsafe, or potentially unsafe conditions with equipment and reports them immediately to Print Supervisor or Foreman.
 
Maintains clean and safe work area.  Learns to clean and perform minor maintenance on machine.
 
Wears proper personal protective equipment when cleaning and setting up equipment. Empties hazardous waste containers as needed.  Follows proper procedures when filling secondary alcohol containers.
 
GENERAL CONDUCT
Maintains respectful working relationship with Teammates, Shift Supervisors, and Foreman to promote teamwork and a positive work environment.

Seeks other tasks during downtime and printing machine changeovers, i.e. assisting co-workers when assigned with their duties if they are behind; cleaning machines and work area.

Submits new ideas to improve Safety, Quality and procedural operations that will benefit the Company.
 
Actively participates in departmental meetings by providing suggestions for improvement, problem solving and offering feedback.
 
Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
High School graduate or equivalent.  Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.  Good color discrimination and manual dexterity.  Ability to understand machine operations.  Requires previous experience or must have achieved mastery of all responsibilities in the Assembler II position.  Ability to work independently and make quick decisions.
 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Prolonged standing.  Frequently pulling, pushing or lifting of 45 lbs.
